Would you like a METRO RATE HIKE? …attend public hearings!

METRO Riders Network – http://metroriders.wordpress.com

Here’s a message from the The League:

And when you’re finished making your voices heard about non-citizen voting rights, go down the hall to the State of Maine Room for more social-justice fun at the METRO public hearing, starting at 7:00pm!

If you ride the bus on a regular basis, rely on the monthly pass to get where you need to go, or you have been considering buying that monthly pass, you should absolutely be at this meeting. Due to budget cuts, METRO is facing some really difficult decisions, and they’re considering raising their fares.

What does that mean?

Single fare would increase from $1.25 to $1.50 (20% increase)

10-ride fare would increase from $11 to $14 (27% increase)

Monthly fare would increase from $37.50 to $45 (20% increase)

If this impacts you or you think it might in the future, now is the time to speak up. We want the METRO Board to think outside the box and come up with creative ways for METRO to decrease spending without having to increase their monthly pass. Because increasing fares is likely to decrease bus use, the METRO is potentially shooting itself in the foot. The Board should decrease the fare for monthly passes to increase ridership.

They will be voting on this on Thursday, February 24, 2010, so there is no time to waste!

Hope to see you there!
